Subject: “Perspectivas de La Vida” Upcoming Exhibit in the Gallery at the Yountville Community Center

The opening reception of “Perspectivas de La Vida” (Life Perspectives), a three-artist exhibit celebrating Latino Heritage, will be Thursday, August 23, 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the Yountville Community Center Gallery located at 6516 Washington Street in Yountville. The featured artists are painter Frances Ortiz-Chavez, photographer Israel Valencia, and painter Jose Martinez. Light bites, beverages and music will be provided.

Ortiz began her art career at age ten as a non-English speaker, building self-esteem when her talent was acknowledged in school. She continued her art education in the Napa Valley and at UC Davis, refining her painting in both acrylic and oil. The work combines family, faith, heritage, traditions, community and social justice. Her personal motto reads, “I’m not just a Woman, a Latina, or an Artist. I’m all of the above and more!”

Valencia moved to the Napa Valley in his early teens with a family move from Guadalajara, Mexico. He discovered photography and his school’s photo lab. His career jumped forward after recovery from leukemia diagnosed at age 20. His second chance at life drew him to the beauty and power of the natural world. He founded a commercial photography company, Infinity Visuals, in 2003 but has continued to work on his photography projects.

Martinez is a painter who works traditionally in oil on canvas or panels portraying everyday people as well as cultural icons. His portfolio includes other media as well, including push-pins, watercolor, charcoal, and pencil. The work is inspired by that of the old masters. He also is dedicated to helping youth express themselves by facilitating art workshops. He has been especially supportive of If Given a Chance Foundation, providing challenged youth with scholarship funds to continue their education.

“Perspectivas de La Vida” will be on display in the gallery through November. Gallery hours are Monday Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Gallery at the Community Center is under the direction of the Yountville Arts Commission. The Latino Heritage Committee of the Napa County Hispanic Network supports this exhibit as part of Latino Heritage Month in the Napa Valley.
