Subject:        “Contemporary Tapestry”, the woven artwork of Sharon Crary opens  January 30 at the Gallery at Community Center

The opening reception for “Contemporary Tapestry”, the woven artwork of Sharon Crary, will be Thursday January 30, 5:30-7:00 PM at Gallery at the Yountville Community Center located at 6516 Washington Street in Yountville.  She will demonstrate the weaving process at the opening night event.  Light bites and beverages will be served.

The artist is a self-taught weaver who captures a textural quality in her pieces.  Born in Ohio, she moved to Los Angeles, Louisiana and finally to Napa where she currently resides.  When her daughters went off to college, she returned to being a speech therapist in the public schools and eventually became Director of Special Education.

Weaving began with the purchase of an antique spinning wheel and wondering what to do with hand spun yarns. She wove rugs, both wool and rag, worked with interior designers and exhibited in galleries and at craft fairs while in Louisiana.  Weaving moved from the back burner to the main focus when Crary retired and settled into a Napa weaving studio.

Not quite spinning straw into gold like in the “Rumpelstiltskin” fairytale, she still weaves her own magic into her tapestries.  Her favorite weaving technique is Peter Collingwood’s shaft-switching that allows her to be free with creative shapes and color-blending.  Her work has been seen in books and other publications, and she was invited to exhibit in early 2019 at the Premier International Tapestry Exhibition in Oakville, Ontario Canada.

Come see the vibrant colors and spatial movement that Sharon Crary creates in her tapestries.  This exhibit is presented by Yountville Arts and runs through April 10.
