Sasha Ariel

The mother-daughter team of Sasha Paulsen (Author) and Ariel Jackson (Publisher - Tempest Books, Ltd.) will be featured at an event Saturday July 20, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the Yountville Community Center – Heritage Room located at 6516 Washington Street in Yountville.  The two will be discussing “Dancing on the Spider’s Web”, which is the debut novel of Napa Valley Register Features Editor Paulsen, with Lori Narlock who is the founder of the Napa Valley Book Festival.

“Spider’s Web” is the first of several novels Paulsen drafted in her 20’s before marriage, children and raising them as a single mom.  Later on, she looked at the old manuscripts and deemed them “terrible”.   Revision led to a rollercoaster of publishers and agents before her daughter stepped in to create Tempest Books.

The novel is set in San Francisco and the Napa Valley in the 1970’s, the “winter after the Summer of Love”.  The main character, Sarah, decides to take a break from medical school and come back to California to encounter many unusual and complex characters.  Paulsen’s children, Sam and Ariel, grew up hearing about Sarah, alongside best-friend Kate and brother Rory, and joked about having these characters as weird cousins.

Paulsen studied journalism at UC Berkeley and after living and working in Europe and New England, returned to hometown Napa to raise her children and join the Napa Valley Register where she wrote about food, wine, art and travel.  She has been a great supporter the arts in Napa Valley.  Jackson holds a MA in linguistics from UC Davis and BA in Spanish and Theatre from Southern Oregon University.  She started Tempest Books because her mother insisted she would be a posthumous author after difficulties with publishers.

The “Spider’s Web” literary event is presented by Yountville Arts.  The Yountville Community Center is located at 6516 Washington Street in Yountville. Books will be available for purchase from Copperfield’s at the event and the author will offer signings. Light bites and beverages will be served.
