Yountville Connection

Wet Weather Information

Wet weather has finally arrived and brings potential challenges such as slippery roads, localized flooding, and saturated ground conditions. As the rain continues through today and into the weekend, it’s essential to stay prepared and prioritize safety for yourself and your neighbors.

Public Works staff continue to monitor creek levels and are prepared to respond to any localized flooding. Winds are expected to gust between 20-30 mph at lower elevations, with higher gusts in the hills. A wind watch remains in effect through 11 p.m. tonight.

To assist the community, Yountville has a sandbag station available for residents and businesses at the south end of Veterans Park. Supplies, including sand, bags, and shovels, are provided for use in preparing sandbags. The station will remain open and monitored throughout the winter. For residents outside Yountville, Napa County has additional sandbag stations available; visit the County's website for locations.

In preparation for the season’s first storm, the Yountville Public Works team implemented a storm-readiness plan, which included:

  • Identifying and monitoring known storm drain inlets, sewer manholes, and overflow-prone areas.
  • Pre-cleaning storm drains and creek drainage in problem areas.
  • Staging necessary equipment, including sandbags and signage.

Storm Preparedness and Safety Tips

  • Prepare Your GO BAG: Include essentials for emergencies.

  • Home Maintenance: Clear gutters and downspouts.

  • Flood Safety:

    • Avoid walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”
    • Six inches of moving water can knock you down; one foot can sweep away a vehicle.
    • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
  • Driving in Wet Conditions:

    • Observe all flood signs and barriers.
    • Check tires, wiper blades, and lights.
    • Slow down and drive with caution.
    • Keep an emergency roadside kit in your car.

Committing to the Five R’s

Reduce your environmental impact by incorporating the Five R’s of
Sustainability into your holiday celebrations.

  1. Refuse: Looking for the perfect holiday present? Mix it up and choose a service-based gift over a good (e.g. spa days or cooking classes). Also decline single-use plastics, such as disposable cutlery or plates.
  2. Reduce: Minimize waste by buying only what you need for holiday meals and choosing gifts that create minimal packaging.
  3. Reuse: Be artistic by repurposing old or used materials for decorations or gift wrapping.
  4. Repurpose: Instead of tossing old holiday ornaments, consider saving them to make ornament wreaths or decorative wind chimes.
  5. Recycle: Properly dispose of recyclable and compostable materials and encourage others to do the same.

Honor Our Heroes with Wreaths Across America 2024

Join the Town of Yountville in honoring our nation’s veterans during the annual Wreaths Across America event, taking place this December. This heartfelt tradition ensures that we remember the service and sacrifice of those who have served our country by placing wreaths on veterans' graves during the holiday season.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the George C. Yount Pioneer Cemetery in Yountville, with the ceremony beginning at 9:00 AM. Volunteers and community members will gather to place wreaths, share stories, and reflect on the service of our local heroes.

You can support this meaningful effort by:

  • Sponsoring a Wreath: Donations ensure that every veteran’s resting place is honored.
  • Volunteering: Join the community in placing wreaths and participating in the ceremony.
  • Spreading the Word: Encourage friends and family to get involved!

For more details or to sponsor a wreath in Yountville, visit Wreaths Across America. Let’s come together as a community to ensure that no veteran is forgotten this holiday season.
