Preparing holiday meals in advance can be both enjoyable and beneficial, setting the stage for memorable gatherings with loved ones while reducing environmental impact. Start by crafting a menu and shopping list to avoid over-purchasing. You might even try the online "guest-imator" tool to estimate portions and make sure your holiday meal prep aligns with your sustainability goals. Plan Ahead: Begin organizing your holiday meal plans early to allow time for thoughtful shopping. An intentional list helps limit food waste and ensures you have just what you need. Save poultry bones to make homemade stock—a perfect addition for rich gravies and sauces. Making stock at home reduces the need for packaged options and repurposes food scraps. Add Plant-Based Choices: Refresh traditional recipes with more plant-based, vegetarian, or gluten-free options. Not ready to dive fully into a meatless holiday? No problem! Try incorporating a few vegan or vegetarian sides to bring color and health to your table. Shop Seasonally: When you grocery shop, look for fresh, seasonal produce from local sources, and skip overly packaged or sugary items. Supporting local farmers' markets, such as the Downtown Palo Alto Saturday market, is a great way to buy sustainably—and consider biking or walking to reduce your carbon footprint! Repurpose for Festive Decor: With your menu and guest list set, let creativity shine in your holiday decor. Upcycle household items to create a cozy, eco-friendly atmosphere. For example, make a garland from dried citrus slices or paint old jars to create candle holders that cast a warm glow on your table.

Solano Avenue Paving Project
The Solano Avenue Rehabilitation Project, funded through Measure T, is our annual paving initiative. This project involves grinding away deteriorating asphalt and replacing it with fresh asphalt. Our target is to complete the work, including new striping, by the week of November 25th. Currently, the project is on track, with pavement work scheduled for completion next week and final striping to be finished by November 20th. The townwide pavement condition index (PCI) rating is presently 78, not accounting for the ongoing work on Solano Avenue. A consultant is assessing our road network to update this rating in our pavement management software, with a final evaluation planned after the Solano Rehabilitation Project concludes. Solano Avenue itself has sections with PCI ratings of 25 and 87, and completing the rehabilitation could raise the townwide average PCI to 80. This project also marks the first time the Town is using rubberized asphalt in pavement rehabilitation. Made from recycled rubber tires, this type of asphalt is frequently utilized by Caltrans.
