Town Manager Update

Hello, Yountville! In the past several weeks, Yountville has endured a series of powerful atmospheric river storms, testing the town’s flood preparedness and stormwater infrastructure. The most intense of these storms, on February 4th, saw water levels in Hopper Creek rise to an unprecedented 8.81 feet—surpassing flood stage by 2.81 feet and marking the highest levels recorded since the 2005 New Year’s Eve flood.

In this short video below, Public Works Director John Ferons shares a great explanation of how the Town manages these events, keeping you informed on what’s happening in Yountville!

Where the Water Flows

Public Works Update
Storm Impact and Response
Flood stage conditions in Yountville triggered localized inundation, particularly in low-lying areas, while the town’s storm drain infrastructure worked to channel excess rainfall. The storm’s severity required an all-hands-on-deck response from Public Works, including the Public Works Administration, Municipal Operations, and Utilities divisions, all of whom mobilized to protect public safety and manage critical infrastructure.

Hopper Creek, an integral part of Yountville’s flood protection system, serves as the first line of defense against stormwater overflow. Meanwhile, the Napa River reached 24.7 feet, remaining under critical thresholds; officials estimate that levels would need to exceed 30 feet before triggering flooding in Yountville.

Proactive Measures and Infrastructure Maintenance
Town officials have been implementing routine and emergency measures to ensure continued flood protection. These include:

  • Annual Clearing of Hopper Creek and Drainage Systems: Crews maintain these essential waterways year-round and intensify efforts before and after major storm events.
  • Pump Station Monitoring and Repairs: The Flood Project Pump Station, a key component in flood management, was put to the test. During the February 4th storm, an automatic water level sensor malfunctioned, requiring manual intervention to prevent flooding. Crews have since taken proactive steps, including 24/7 manual monitoring, to ensure continued operation in future storms.

Ongoing Efforts for Flood Resilience
While the February storms challenged Yountville’s infrastructure, the town’s emergency preparedness and quick response prevented even more severe impacts. Town staff remain vigilant, refining protocols and maintaining stormwater systems to safeguard residents and properties from future extreme weather events.

The community is encouraged to stay informed through official updates from the Town of Yountville.  Officials continue to assess stormwater management strategies and explore future improvements to enhance resilience against climate-driven weather challenges.
